On the opposite side of the river from the Garda (police) Station is a rock engraved with a carved shield bearing a lion by Daniel O'Connell's friend, Tom Steele. It was on this rock that he sat and waited to catch a glimpse of Eileen Crowe who lived in the house across the river. She never acknowledged his presence.
