That’s right, our translation forum has now received 500,000 posts by 38,000 users. The forum began in its current form in May 2002, and existed at another domain probably for a year or two before that.

Post numbers kept on growing for 3 years, until 2005. The number of postings has flattened since then. This might be explained by the existing information being searched rather than being asked for from the new. More searches now happen on the forum, than the number of views of the forum’s main page!

The number of postings is much of the result of the forum’s top posters, and I very grateful of all of them. Here’s the Top 10 all-time posters on the forum.

50 years after de Bhaldraithe’s English-Irish Dictionary, Foras na Gaeilge is developing a new modern English-Irish dictionary.

The dictionary will be complete around 2012, from what I understand. (Project info at focloir.ie.)

After defining the framework, Foras na Gaeilge has now signed a contract for the 50,000 headwords to be compiled. This will continue until 2010. The dictionary will then be incrementally translated to Irish.

The dictionary will eventually be available in both electronic and print versions.

Side-note of pondering: Will Foras na Gaeilge retain strict copyright on the dictionary, or allow different groups create their own electronic interface to the dictionary? In my own experience, such DVD versions are bloated without intuitive user interfaces.

It’s not yet clear if many people would make us of the Irish language test, but it may be a nice thing to do for a serious and interested learner who is also planning to move to Ireland.

D’fhreastail mé ar léacht (as Béarla) le Dr. Tadhg Ó hIfearnáin le déanaí in Ollscoil Luimnigh. A cheist a bhí idir láimhe aige ná: “The Death of the Gaeltacht? Irish language policy, language planners and the community”.

Don chuid is mó, dár leis féin, tá polasaithe teanga an Rialtais ag cabhrú le héag an Ghaeltachta.

Roimh lár an 19ú aois, bhí an chuid is mó de phobal na hÉireann aon-teangach. Dá bhrí sin, bhí deighilt sóisialta agus eacnamaíochta idir na Gaeilgeoirí agus Béarlóirí.

Le bunú an Saorstáit, bhí 18% den daonra le Gaeilge amháin acu. Bhí pobail le Gaeilge acu i 20 de na contaetha.

Dár le Tadhg, níor cuireadh pobail na Gaeltachta san áireamh i bpolasaithe teanga an Rialtais le 80 bliain anuas.

Idir 1926 agus 1956 bhí suas le 14 sainmhíniú leis “An Ghaeltacht”. Bhí sé in ainm is a bheith ag aithriú go leanúnach. Bhí an tír deighilte mar an Ghalltacht, an breac-Ghaeltacht agus an fíor-Ghaeltacht.

An aidhm oifigiúil a raibh ann I gcónaí ná an tír a bheith aon-teangach (teanga na Gaeilge). Ar ndóigh, níor tharla a leithéid!

I 1956 bunaíodh Roinn na Gaeilge. Le sin, bhí orthu teorann dlíthiúil don Ghaeltacht a leagadh amach. Ach ní raibh an teorainn seo bunaithe go díreach ar úsáid na teanga. Cuireadh san áireamh cuideanna den Ghalltacht, agus ag fágaint ar láir Gaeilgeoirí a raibh ar an imeall.

Mar shampla, i Múscraí in iarr-Chorcaí tá baile fearainn amháin sa Ghaeltacht fós sa lá atá inniu ann toisc go raibh beirt Gaeilgeoir ina chónaí ann. Ach d’imigh an beirt go tigh altranais i 1965.

Inniu, dár le Tadhg, tá muintir na Gaeltachta ag iarraidh sochaí dhá-theangach. Bheadh eagla orthu mura raibh an Béarla ag a leanaí. Tá polasaithe na Rialtais fós ag cuir aon-teangachas mar aidhm acu (ar laghad go hoifigiúil). Níl seo ag oibriú. Níl Gaeltachtaí láidire ann le 20 nó 25 bliana anuas, agus tá an breac-Ghaeltacht imithe.

Ní oibreoidh polasaithe a thriallann an teanga a tharraingt ar ais sa stair. Ní foláir bogadh chun tosaigh, leis an teanga a choimeád beo, a deir Tadhg.

Dár leis, tá fós go leoir daoine óga le Gaeilge ‘líofa’ acu – ach tá an Ghaeilge atá acu lofa! Measainn sé gur staid báis é seo don teanga, ní saghas créole atá ann.

Is Gaeilgeoir mise le Gaeilge lofa. Ach ní bhreáthaím go bhfuilim mar cuid de bhás an teanga!

Dár liom féin, beidh todhchaí na teanga ar fud na tíre, ní amháin sa Ghaeltacht. Tá cathracha na hÉireann ina nGalltacht le céadta blianta anois. Caithfimid an Ghaeilge a chuir chun chín i ngach áit, agus ar ndóigh tá an Ghaeltacht ina páirt tábhachtach de sin.

RTÉ have reported figures on the number of native Irish-speaking children attending Irish language preschools. At these naíonraí, many of the activities are through the medium of the Irish language. This is a great age for children to learn the language.

While no native speaker attended a naíonra in Mayo in 2006, 25% of the children in Galway were native speakers. This includes the Conamara Gaeltacht and the Oileáin Árann.

No Galway child attending naíonraí east of Galway city had “any” understanding of the language. But it is positive that parents of English-speaking kids want to send them to naíonraí to be exposed to the language.

The site started in 2002, and originally featured around 200 recordings. In 2006, new recordings were added for Connacht and Ulster dialects, which should be a great aid for learners.

In May 2007, I added new categories, and rearranged the site for better accessibility. There’s now a total of 464 phrases, and over 900 recordings.

Thanks to all the listeners over the past five years!
