Hi David, I appreciate the correction on the fact. Great to hear that a Spanish-Irish dictionary is also on the way. Perhaps you could keep us posted.

My attention has been drawn to your note on the Irish-Spanish dictionary of which I am General Editor and co-author.

First, I would like to thank you for bringing the publication of this dictionary to the notice of those interested in translation to/from Irish. This is the first Irish-Spanish dictionary ever to be published. Given the countless historic links between Ireland and the Hispanic world, such a dictionary is overdue.

May I correct one detail. The article that you cite gives the impression that the dictionary project began in the 1970s. This is not so. Jose Antonio Sierra, then Director of the Spanish Cultural Institute, attempted to interest the Irish authorities in preparing such a dictionary. He received no support, hence nothing happened.

The genesis of our dictionary is in the pilot work undertaken in the 1990s at the Escuela Oficial de Idiomas in Madrid. Towards the end of that decade the pilot draft was offered to the Linguistics Institute of Ireland (ITE), which accepted the Madrid work as a basis for embarking on research towards the publication of a full and comprehensive dictionary. I was appointed editor.

This is the first of a two-part set. Work on the second volume, the Spanish-Irish dictionary, is well advanced, and I hope to see it published next year.

Once again, my thanks for your interest. Should anyone wish to offer feedback I will welcome any correspondence to the e-mail address below.
