I said this phrase in 2003 to a police officer while in Belfast as I stumbled out of a pub on vacation (holiday) with some buddies at the age of 19. I knew the translation, but did not know the heavy political meaning behind it. I am from the states and was told by some Irish friends at University a few phrases to say in Gaelic, this being one of them. Luckily, I had become friends with some locals and as the words left my mouth they grabbed me and rushed me back inside the pub. This did not go over so well with the officers, but my Irish buddies explained to the officers I was a dumb American and didn't realize what I was saying, which I didn't, and the troubles had not been that long before. Luckily, Ireland is the friendliest nation on earth, so nothing more came of it, but it's a good example of the reason this is a dangerous word if said in the wrong place, to the wrong person and in the wrong context...

To correct the innacurate translation above:

Tiocfaidh is future conditional tense meaning "will come": tiocaidh ar la does translate literally as: 'our day will come'

Beidh ar la linn translates as: our day will be with us (future tense)

Excuse the lack of fadas: I'm writing from an iPhone
